Quats Found in Dog Food

quats found in dog food

We’ve blogged about Quats ( Quaternary Ammonium Compounds) and how they are destroying our marine life and coral reefs, we’ve also discussed how quats are found in many of our household cleaning supplies, which have been linked to health concerns among our children and adults alike due to the overkill and dangerous use of them. Now it’s time to talk about what quats are doing to our furry family members.

As recent as 2017, United Pet Group issued a voluntary recall of Rawhide Dog Chew products that were sold to retail outlets and online in the United States. Exposure to these quaternary ammonium compounds, also known as “quats”, may cause diarrhea, vomiting and reduced appetite.

What Caused The Recall?

The recall was initiated after United Pet Group realized that specific rawhide chew manufacturing facilities in Mexico and Colombia, as well as one of its suppliers in Brazil, were using a quaternary ammonium compound mixture as a processing aid in the manufacturing of rawhide chews.

The importance of understanding the dangers of quats is critical. Our dogs cannot speak to us, so we rely on their body language for communication. We know when our fur babies are acting different and hopefully pick up their non-verbal cues when something is wrong. We take every precaution with our pets to make sure they are healthy and live their happiest life. By taking them to the vet, feeding and walking them regularly, we encourage good behavior.

We as consumers should hold these companies accountable if anything were to happen to our pets due to the misuse of Quats, which have no place to be in pet food whatsoever.

What Can You Do?

Make sure to read the label of the products you use around your pet, from their food to the cleaning products around your house. Questioning and researching the ingredients you are unsure about is a start and can effectively help reduce any contamination or use of Quat inclusive products.

Quats have been used as an easy, cut the corner ingredient in many different things we use to clean our homes and offices on a daily basis. It has also been used as the main ingredient in many of our household items. Understanding the dangers of quats will help eliminate potential harm, whether it’s directly to us, our kids and our pets.
